January 2020 Whole School Newsletter and Dates for the term
Mon 13 Jan 2020Up to date information is available on the school website including dates for both spring and summer term, staff training days, trips and much more.
Emergency Closure
Schools are no longer required to notify local radio stations. If the school is to be closed for any reason, this will be published on the school website by 8am.
Swimming
Year 3 swimming will resume on Monday 13th January – may we remind you that the voluntary contribution of £30 for the whole term to Easter is now due. There are 10 consecutive weeks of swimming sessions, finishing on Monday 23rd March.
Teacher led clubs
Teacher led after school clubs will begin week starting Monday 20th January.
SATs week
SAT tests for children in Years 6 will take place week beginning Monday 11th May. It is important that all Year 6 children are in school throughout this week.
Trips
Trips for each year group have been booked and dates confirmed. Payments can be made on ParentMail now for each of these trips (refer to Dates for Your Diary).
Osmington Bay
Year 6 parents are reminded that the balance for the Osmington Bay trip is due by Friday 27 March. Remember that you can pay smaller amounts by ParentMail or by sending in cash or cheque, building up to the final balance if you choose.
Safety in the School Car Park
The school car park is a very busy place. We have allocated a section of the car park for visitor parking where children can be collected and dropped off.
In order to safeguard the safety of the children please do not:
- drive into the staff car park to drop off children.
- allow the children to cross the car park, insist that they use the pavements
- use the school drive in order to turn around
- obstruct the main blue gates restricting access for emergency vehicles
Parking
If you bring or collect your child by car, please only park on the school side of Mudeford Lane and never stop on the raised area opposite the gate to allow children crossing the road to have a clear view either way. Neighbours have also requested that driveways and garages are not blocked when collecting your child. If you are collecting from the Nelson Drive gate, please be considerate when parking and do not obstruct this pedestrian gate. Dropping off or parking on zig-zag lines also places our children at risk.
Parent Evenings
Year 6 parent evenings will be on Tuesday 4th February 4.00-6.30pm and Wednesday 5th February, 5.30-8.00pm. For Years 3, 4, 5 parent evenings will be held on Tuesday 24 March 4.00-6.30pm and Wednesday 25 March 5.30-8.00 pm.
Parent View Website
As part of the new Ofsted inspection process a website has been launched asking for parents’ views on every school. It is a very quick and simple survey requiring only 2 minutes of your time. We would very much appreciate your support in completing this survey.
The address for Ofsted is: http://parentview.ofsted.gov.uk
Then go to the section “Give your views”. Many thanks for your continued support.
Friends of Mudeford Junior School
The PTA’s Christmas activities were a huge success, raising over £5000 (the exact figure to be confirmed) and we appreciate all the support given by parents and staff.

Internet Safety Talks for Parents (Wednesday 13th November 2pm)
Mon 30 Sep 2019Internet Safety
Information Session for Parents and Carers on: Wednesday 13th November 2pm.
There have been incidents recently highlighted by the media that have raised enquiries from parents and carers, as to HOW they can protect their children whilst on the Internet. In response to this, the Safe Schools & Communities Team have put together information sessions for parents and carers.
These sessions are being offered to all schools across the County to give parents a reference for sources of useful advice and support. Our children have access to the Internet via school, friends, and libraries and even via mobile phones and games stations, so this information is important even if you may not have Internet access in the home.
Whilst we seek to protect our children it is important to keep the risk in perspective, as there are great benefits to the use of the Internet. It is really a case of taking simple, sensible steps along with parental/carer vigilance, to minimise the risk, and equip our children with the knowledge and skills to keep them safe from harm.
The Internet is a great tool …but it does have a ‘Dark Side’ and the whole concept of this session is to raise your awareness so you can identify where threats and potential dangers may lie.

Wessex Lifebus Visit - Parents Workshop Thursday 3 October 2.50pm
Mon 16 Sep 2019Life Education Wessex & Thames Valley is an independent and self-supporting branch of a national charity which provides health, well-being and drug education to children aged 3 – 13 years.
Our aim is to help equip young people with the knowledge, skills and self-confidence to form positive healthy attitudes and make healthy choices. We support schools, parents and community groups and our programmes help to meet National Curriculum and government guidelines for health and drug education.
Young people are facing ever-increasing risks to their health through poor diet, drinking alcohol, smoking and misusing drugs. Our fun and interactive series of age appropriate programmes help children to understand the wonders of the human body and how to look after it.
Our experienced and specially trained Educators help Key Stage 2 children (Years 3 to 6) to consider the effects and risks associated with the use of drugs, including medicines, alcohol and tobacco. In addition, children learn about choices that can affect health and well-being, skills of friendship and how to cope with bullying and peer pressure.
Through the use of group work, puppets, circle time discussion, drama techniques such as role play and hot-seating, music, exercise, electronic models and a variety of audio/visual materials, all children are encouraged to participate.
Parents’ sessions and workshops are often organised so that you can find out what happens inside the Mobile Classroom.

Whole School Newsletter June 2019
Tue 04 Jun 2019Sports Day
We would like to remind you that Sports Day will be held on Friday 7 June, starting at 1.10pm. The gates will be open at 1.00 pm when there will be an opportunity to have refreshments before the sports begin. Please remember that the school has a no smoking and no dogs policy for the whole school site. Children are encouraged to wear a coloured T-shirt (not a football top) representing the colour of their team. In case of bad weather, the decision to cancel will be made by 11.30am and posted on the school website. The reserve Sports Day will be Thursday 13th June, same timings.
Multi use games area (MUGA) and outdoor gym equipment
Over the last few months you will have noticed the construction of the MUGA and gym equipment. These resources will help add to the sporting opportunities that the school offers. This ambitious project has been entirely funded through donations and grants from the following outside agencies, to whom we are extremely grateful: The Friends of Mudeford Junior School, Talbot Village Trust, Christchurch Rotary Club, The Lawn Tennis Association, Children’s Services Dorset Council and Public Health Dorset.
Playground Supervision
There is no supervision on the playgrounds before 8.35 am and we ask that children arrive at school between 8.35 and 8.45 am. At the end of the school day, please ensure that children are supervised if they are playing on the trim trail and gym equipment thus ensuring their safety at all times. We also ask that there is no cycling or scooting in the school grounds.
Sun Protection
As the warmer weather is on its way, we are concerned that the children have adequate protection from the sun especially during the long lunch break. Could you please send the children to school with:
Sun cream Hat Water bottle
We will allow the children to have a drink as often as they need it. Thank you for your support.
Holidays in Term Time
Government legislation makes it clear that headteachers may not grant any leave of absence during term times unless there are exceptional circumstances. It is extremely unlikely that time out of school for a holiday will be considered exceptional circumstances. As a school we are committed to ensuring that pupils miss as little time as possible.
Medication in School
As the hayfever season is upon us we are receiving lots of medication for use at lunchtimes. Please remember all medication must be kept in the office, not in the children’s bags, should be labelled clearly with the pupil’s name and an adult is required to have completed a form giving us instructions for administration.
Dress Code
We are finding more children are wearing jewellery to school. As part of the school’s health and safety policy the children are not allowed to wear rings, wristbands or friendship bracelets, necklaces or ear-rings. Children are allowed to wear ear studs but they must be taped up for PE and games. Nail varnish should not be worn. Please can we remind you that boots should not be worn to school and the children should be wearing plain white, grey or navy socks. Can we also remind you that plain black leather style shoes are to be worn. Black trainers or running shoes are not acceptable.
Year 5 and 6 Parents Meeting re Health and Relationships Education
The meeting will take place on Monday 10 June at 5.00 – 7.00 pm. This is an opportunity for Year 5 and Year 6 parents to view the material that will be used during the health and relationship education lessons.
Year 5 Parents workshop on secondary school applications for September 2020.
Carly Williams from Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council will be informing the Year 5 parents about applications and admissions for secondary school placements in September 2020. (18:00 – 19:00)
Open Evening
There will be an informal open evening for years 3,4 and 6 on Wednesday 10 July between 5.15 and 6.45 pm. This is an opportunity for children to bring their parents in to school to look through their work. Teachers will be in attendance.
Safety in the School Car Park
The school car park is a very busy place. We have allocated a section of the car park for visitor parking where children can be collected and dropped off.
In order to safeguard the safety of the children please do not:
• drive into the staff car park to drop off children.
• allow the children to cross the car park, insist that they use the pavements
• use the school drive in order to turn around
• obstruct the main green gates restricting access for emergency vehicles
Parking
If you bring or collect your child by car, please only park on the school side of Mudeford Lane and never stop on the raised area opposite the gate to allow children crossing the road to have a clear view either way.
