Art and Design
Art and Design Intent Statement
The art and design curriculum at Mudeford Junior School will engage, inspire and challenge all children, equipping them with the knowledge and skills that they will need to explore, experiment with ideas and discover their own works of art, craft and design.
Sketchbooks are used to develop and showcase children’s ideas and to build on individual knowledge and skills in drawing, painting, modelling, printmaking, collage and textiles. Children are encouraged to work independently but also in group collaborations to create artistic pieces on both small and large scales which are celebrated on displays around the school.
At Mudeford Junior School, art and design is taught beyond the national curriculum within a relevant and meaningful context. Art and design is a discrete, timetabled subject. We make purposeful cross-curricular links through ‘Global and Community Cohesion’ weeks, art through history and in other cultures. The children will engage in research about artists and designers and learn about local and diverse cultures to enlighten their imagination and broaden their understanding of the world around them. As well as this, children will have the opportunity to visit art galleries and experience school visits from working artists.
Children leave our school ready to move on to the next stage in their art and design education with a broad knowledge of a range of artists and artistic skills. Children will be creative in the works of art they form and be able to think analytically and critically when evaluating artistic intent, as well as their own and other children’s art.
