National Champions at Wembley Stadium
National Champions at Wembley Stadium
The season started with the boys winning the Bournemouth Area Preditor Cup at the Littledown Centre. The team then went on to the English Schools Football Association (ESFA) Dorset Finals which they also won. This took the team onto the next stage, the ESFA South West Area Finals at the Cadbury Factory in Keynsham, Bristol. Winning at this stage would take the team to the ESFA National Finals at Watford's Training Ground. Unfortunately, the boys came third in their group and did not make it through to the Finals.
However, this was really just the beginning as the boys started their journey on another exciting tournament journey. Just weeks after the disappointment at Bristol, the team entered The Football League Community Cup Group stages organised by AFC Bournemouth at the Littledown Centre. The team won the initial competition and then went on to compete in the Final against another local school at Dean Court - Mudeford Junior won 5-0. By winning this Mudeford Juniors then represented AFC Bournemouth by going through to The Football League Community Cup South Finals at Barnet's Training Ground - The Hive. Again, the boys were triumphant throughout and won the competition. Up to this point they had not even let in a single goal from the very first match at the Littledown. This remarkable achievement set-up the big finale finish - The Football League Community Cup National Final (North v South teams) at Wembley Stadium before the League 2 Play-off Final (Rotherham v Dagenham & Redbridge).
Before embarking on the Final the boys also took part in the Christchurch District Tournament at the Grange, which they won. The day at Wembley was made even more special when the Football League informed us that the team would be staying overnight at a hotel next door to the Stadium. The team would also take part in an evening of bowling the night before, a tour of the stadium before the match, use the stadium changing rooms and have seats to watch the Play-off Final after the Community Cup.
The boys had a great evening of bowling and enjoyed the stadium tour, but nerves began to kick in as they walked out of the side-tunnel to play the final in front of 7000-8000 fans. The game started in opposition's favour with a couple of early chances, but then Mudeford Junior School took the game to them with numerous chances hitting the woodwork or flying just wide of the opposition goal. The game looked destined for a 0-0 draw even with so much Mudeford pressure. Then in the dying seconds a great turn of pace and pass out wide by Joe Cook to Jack Wyeth set-up Callum Baughan to score the winner! The final score 1-0 to Mudeford Junior and National Champions without conceding a single goal throughout the whole competiton.
